When you're on the hunt for a new dining room table, choosing the right height is an important aspect towards both the aesthetics and functionality of the room. Learn how to choose the perfect dining table height and more measurements.
Dining Table Height Guide
There are four common dining table heights: standard, counter height, bar height and extra tall. Adjustable height tables are also common.
Shop Adjustable Height Tables
Standard
Standard height tables are about 70 – 75cm high and are meant to be used with chairs that have seat heights of 40 – 50cm. This height is more formal and works well for families with a wide range of age and mobility.
Counter
Counter height tables are about 85 – 90cm high and are meant to be used with chairs that have seat heights of 55 – 65cm. These tables offer a more informal feel and are great for small spaces, as the height creates a more open look.
Bar
Bar height tables are 105 – 110cm high and are meant to be used with bar stools that are 75 – 82cm high. These tables can be a nostalgic replica of a bar in your own home.

Extra tall tables are 110 – 120cm high and are meant to be used with chairs that have seat heights of 85 – 90cm. Extra-tall tables are an extremely popular option in modern and contemporary homes.
If you're buying chairs separately from the table, always check the seat height. There should be 25 – 30cm between the chair seat and the bottom of the table.
Dining Table Width & Length
While dining table height is important, width and length are also crucial factors to consider. These two aspects impact how your room looks and how comfortable eating at your table will be.
Width
The table width – which is measured along the 'head' of the table – impacts how easy it is to pass plates and how many platters or serving pieces can fit along the centre line of the table. To easily pass food across the table, the width should be no more than 120cm. However, if you have a sideboard or buffet table and only plan to have place settings on the table, you can choose a narrower table that is as small as 75cm wide.
Tip: Dining table width, length and height information can be found in the 'Size' tab for each product on Wayfair.co.uk.
Length
For guests to sit and eat comfortably (avoid bumping any elbows), each guest should have 60 – 66cm of horizontal space. To steer clear of dings and scratches, keep 15cm between chairs. If you're buying chairs separately, knowing the table's length will also help you know how many chairs can fit at your table. Just remember that the legs of the table may take away a few centimeters on each side.
Dining Room Measurements
Both width and length impact how you move around the room, so it is important to know the dimensions of your dining room while shopping.
There should be at least 9cm0 – 120cm of space between the table and the wall so guests can easily walk around the table. We also recommend having at least 120cm between a table and a doorway.
Dining Table Shape
It's important to recognise how the size and shape of your dining table affect seating capacity.
Round
Round dining tables take up less space than other shapes. This makes them perfect for small rooms where space may be limited. They fit especially well in the center of square rooms, where their rounded edges leave the room feeling much more spacious. Do not use round tables in rectangular rooms.

Rectangular
Rectangular tables fit well within rectangular rooms. When in doubt, choose a table shape that mimics the overall room shape. These dining tables do not work well within a square room, as the long length would appear oversize and affect how you move around the table.

Oval
Oval tables are a stylish alternative to rectangular tables. They work well in modern and contemporary spaces and fit best in long, rectangular rooms. Do not put an oval table in a square or round room.

Square
Similar to round tables, square dining tables are best used in small spaces. Match the table to the space by only using square tables in square rooms.

Free Form
Choose a free-form table if you want something eye-catching. These dining tables come in a variety of organic or novelty shapes. Due to their irregular shape and size, play it safe by using free-form tables in large, unrestricted spaces.

Seating Capacity
Dining tables sit anywhere from two people to over eight people. Use the following chart as reference for combining seating capacity, table shape and table size in your space.
